Chengdu is the largest city and capital of the Sichuan Province in China. Over the centuries the city has had many nicknames, all of which extolling this as one of the most abundant and heavenly areas of the world. The city has a reputation for being a place to relax and soak up the culture. This mega city is well known for the good quality nightlife and the many luxury hotels Chengdu offers, which go out of their way to make sure that visitors enjoy their stay.

There are plenty of ways to get around without having to take tours, if you don't want to. The center of the city is Tianfu Square. At noon and at dusk there is a musical fountain show and underneath the square is a large shopping center and the metro.

For a fascinating look into the past visit Jinsha Excavation Site. There are two parts to this site; firstly the hall built over the archaeological dig itself and the other where some of the artifacts found are displayed. A large number of items have been unearthed at the site which is believed to date back 3000 years; they include gold statues, jade, tools, pottery and building foundations.

For a less cultural experience take a stroll down Jinli Ancient Street. This old fashioned street is popular for the bars, clubs and restaurants which bring it to life at night. During the day there are many shops and local snack foods sold in the street. It is considered a tourist area and this is reflected in prices but picturesque and fun anyway.

There are numerous temples in Chengdu and each has different characteristics which make them interesting to see. The Wenshu Temple is a pleasant place to sit and enjoy ordinary people getting on with their lives. This Buddhist temple has a tea house and vegetarian restaurant. Local residents gather in the tea house to pass the time playing chess, reading or chatting to friends and family. Inside the temple there are nearly 500 Buddha statues and other items. It can be found off the Renmin Zhong Road.

For the nature lover and environmentalist a trip to the Panda Research Base is a must. This reserve is one of the most important places in the world for the endangered Giant Panda and other animals. Six miles from Chengdu this facility allows visitors to see these animals in as natural setting as you are likely to find anywhere. You are still able to get quite close up and feeding time is at half past nine in the morning. There is a Giant Panda Museum on site which aims to raise awareness.

For a step back in time visit Huanglongxi Ancient Town. With a history dating back more than 1700 years and set in some wonderfully undeveloped countryside, this ancient town can give visitors a real glimpse of the way things were in most places in China before the development of mega cities. Three ancient temples, stilt houses and 800 year old trees are among the sights to be seen here. It is claimed that this town has been used as a setting for about a hundred films so it is possible that parts may look familiar.

It is highly recommended that the luxury hotels Chengdu offers are used as a base and that some of the spectacular attractions further out of the city are visited. Huang Long Valley, or Yellow Dragon Valley, also gets called 'World Wonder' and 'Fairy Land on Earth'. It was added as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. There are technical explanations for its formation to do with glaciers and calcium and so on, but basically the valley really does look like it has a giant dragon winding its way down through the forest. There are ponds which look golden in the sunlight and add to the overall picture. Beaches, waterfalls, caves and natural springs are just the tip of the iceberg (or should that be glacier.) because there are also the trees, flowers, butterflies and exotic birds to be seen here.

The artisans of Chengdu are famous for their embroideries and brocades. The embroideries are brightly colored and well designed and can still be found in many places within the city. For information on where to purchase authentic, good quality, local work please check with the staff at the luxury hotels Chengdu offers who will be able to assist with all your needs. There are many shopping centers and local markets for all your needs.
